The West Parley Miniature Engineering Society was formed to keep the miniature railway at the Garden Centre running and to fill the gap left by the departure of the rolling stock that originally came from the Dobwalls Forest Railroad in Cornwall and spent an all too brief a period in Dorset. It must be emphasised that whilst you may well see advertisements relating to the Dobwalls locos during your visit or indeed whilst watching videos on YouTube these locos are in private hands in Australia - you will therefore not be seeing them at Ferndown! - (unfortunately)
The video below shows the "Big Boy" - William Jeffers and the A-B cab diesel loco the "Spirit of America" running on the Diamond Valley Railway in Australia.
The Society is a member of the Southern Federation of Model Engineers and has adopted their Rule Book.
Originally the railway ran in a (slightly deformed) circle around a field at the back of the Garden Centre with the station being on a siding off of this line which meant that trains had to reverse back into the station after their customary two circuits of the field. This was more than somewhat inconvenient and there is now a line which comes off of the main line, through a tunnel into the station and then rejoins the main line via a sprung point. Video showing this line being built can be seen on the videos page of this site. The point off of the mainline is controlled electrically
